چکیده

Since the mid-1990s, chlorophyll a (chl a) fluorescence measurement has become widespread to monitor photosynthetic performance of microalgal mass cultures. This paper aims to provide practical instructions for microalgal physiologists and biotechnologists on how fluorescence monitoring can be used to explain changes in photosynthetic activity of microalgal mass cultures. Emphasis is placed on the 2 most common fluorescence techniques—pulse-amplitudemodulation and fluorescence induction kinetics—and the interpretation of important variables that reflect changes of photosynthesis and physiological status of microalgal cultures. In particular, consideration is given to problems associated with the estimation of the photochemical yield of photosystem II and its relationship to linear electron transport rate and overall photosynthesis. Emphasis is also given to the applications and limitations of these techniques through several case studies. In model experiments with microalgal cultures, typical records and their interpretation under various culture conditions are illustrated. Changes of photosynthetic activity and selected variables monitored by chl a fluorescence techniques can thus be related to changes of cultivation conditions, physiological status and growth of microalgal cultures for a given microalgal strain and cultivation system. In this way, chl a fluorescence may be used as a rapid screening technique to monitor photosynthetic activity and subsequently to estimate growth rate in both indoor and outdoor studies. This text and results formed the basis of a key lecture at the 9th International GAP workshop held at the University of Málaga in September 2012.

The effect of spraying of methyl jasmonate and 24-epi-brassinolide on photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and leaf stomatal traits in black mustard (Brassica nigra L.) under salinity stress

Methyl jasmonate and Epi-brassinolide as plant growth regulators have significant biological effects on plant growth, including increased tolerance to salt stress in plants. In this study, the effects of salinity stress and its interaction with methyl jasmonate and Epi-brassinolide on chlorophyll concentration, rate of photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and resistance and chlor...

The effect of foliar application of kaolin, phosphorus and potassium on photosynthesis of pistachio trees cv. “Kalle-Ghouchiˮ

In an orchard experiment, the effects of foliar application of kaolin, potassium, phosphorus and their different combinations were examined on photosynthesis parameter 8-years-old pistachio trees cv.Kalle-ghouchi in 2016. There were ten treatments, including two rate of P (1 and 2%), two rates of K (1.5 and 3%), kaolin 5%, kaolin 5%+ P 1%, kaolin 5%+P 2%, kaolin 5%+ K 1.5%, kaolin 5%+ K 3% and ...

Characterization of cell response in Chlamydomonas moewusii cultures exposed to the herbicide paraquat: Induction of chlorosis.

The use of herbicides constitutes the principal method of weed control, but the introduction of these compounds into the aquatic environment can provoke severe consequences for non-target organisms such as microalgae. Effects of the widely used herbicide paraquat were assessed on the green freshwater microalga Chlamydomonas moewusii by means of the analysis of its photosynthetic pigment content...

Measuring the effects of salinity stress in the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle L

The mangrove habitat exhibits many unique physical features, one of the most important of which is a salinity gradient. Photosynthetic rates, as measured by leaf stomatal conductance and leaf chlorophyll fluorescence induction, were tested as indicators of salinity stress in seedlings of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, grown under five different salinity levels: 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 parts...
